 1. Cherry Blossoms (Sakura)

Blooming: Late March – Early April

The most iconic spring flower in Japan. Tokyo transforms into a pink wonderland during sakura season.

Best spots in Tokyo:

  • Ueno Park (Taito)

  • Shinjuku Gyoen (Shinjuku)

  • Meguro River (Nakameguro)

  • Chidorigafuchi (near the Imperial Palace)

2. Plum Blossoms (Ume)

Blooming: February – Early March

Plum blossoms bloom before sakura and have a sweet fragrance. They are slightly rounder and more delicate-looking than cherry blossoms.

Where to see them:

  • Yushima Tenjin Shrine (Bunkyo)

  • Koishikawa Korakuen Garden

Perfect if you visit Tokyo in late winter or very early spring.

3. Tulips

Blooming: April – May

Bright and colorful tulips fill large open gardens once cherry blossom season ends.

Best spot:

  • Showa Memorial Park (Tachikawa)

Thousands of tulips bloom in neat rows, creating a rainbow-like landscape.

 4. Wisteria (Fuji)

Blooming: Late April – Early May

Wisteria flowers hang down in soft purple and white clusters, forming beautiful flower tunnels.

Where in Tokyo:

  • Kameido Tenjin Shrine (Koto Ward)

This shrine is famous for its wisteria festival and evening illuminations.

 5. Azaleas (Tsutsuji)

Blooming: April – May

Azaleas bloom in bright pink, red, and white. You’ll see them in many parks and temple gardens.

Best viewing spot:

  • Nezu Shrine (Bunkyo)

The hillside covered with thousands of azalea bushes is one of Tokyo’s hidden spring gems.

6. Nemophila

Blooming: April – May

Small sky-blue flowers that look like tiny pieces of the sky.

In Tokyo:

  • Showa Memorial Park

While the most famous fields are outside Tokyo, you can still see beautiful patches within the city.

7. Rapeseed Flowers (Nanohana)

Blooming: March – April

Bright yellow flowers that often bloom alongside cherry blossoms.

Where to see them:

  • Riverside parks and open fields around Tokyo

  • Edogawa riverbanks

They create a stunning contrast with pink sakura trees.

When to Visit for Each Flower

  • February–March: Plum blossoms

  • Late March–Early April: Cherry blossoms

  • April–May: Wisteria, azaleas, tulips, nemophila

Spring in Tokyo lasts longer than just sakura season. Even after the cherry blossoms fall, the city continues blooming in waves of color.
