Cherry Blossom 2027 in Tokyo: When to Book Your Stay

Tokyo usually blooms in late March. Which dates to book for 2027, when to reserve, and houses for 6–9 from ¥12,000 (about US$80) a night.

For cherry blossoms in Tokyo in 2027, plan to be in the city for the last week of March and the first days of April, and book your stay now. Tokyo's official first-bloom date averages March 24 and full bloom averages March 31, but in the last six years full bloom has landed anywhere from March 22 to April 4. The official 2027 forecasts are not out yet in October 2026, so the safest plan is a trip that spans roughly March 25 to April 5, booked with a free-cancellation window.

We host travelers in furnished houses in Ekoda and Nerima, northwest Tokyo, and late March is our busiest season. Below are the real bloom dates, what drives the timing, when to book, and why a residential area can be a better base than central Tokyo for sakura (cherry blossom) season.

When do cherry blossoms bloom in Tokyo?

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) records Tokyo's dates from a sample Somei Yoshino tree at Yasukuni Shrine. "First bloom" (kaika) is declared when at least five or six flowers open on that tree. "Full bloom" (mankai) is when about 80% of its buds are open. Full bloom usually comes about a week after first bloom, and trees stay attractive for roughly a week after that, depending on wind and rain.

Here are the JMA dates for Tokyo:

YearFirst bloomFull bloom
2021March 14March 22
2022March 20March 27
2023March 14March 22
2024March 29April 4
2025March 24March 30
2026March 19March 28
Average (1991–2020)March 24March 31

Two things stand out. Recent seasons have run early more often than late, and the spread is wide: about two weeks between the earliest and latest full bloom. A single fixed week can miss the peak, so build in slack.

Is there a 2027 cherry blossom forecast yet?

Not yet. As of October 2026, no official forecast for spring 2027 has been published, and anyone quoting exact 2027 bloom dates today is guessing. The JMA itself stopped issuing bloom forecasts in 2010 and now only records the dates. Forecasts come from private weather companies such as the Japan Meteorological Corporation and Weathernews. For the 2026 season, the first forecasts appeared in winter and were updated through March.

What decides the timing is mostly temperature. A warm February and March pulls bloom earlier; a cold snap pushes it back. That is why forecasts get more reliable from February onward, when it is often too late to find good rooms at fair prices. Our advice: book the place to stay now, using the historical range, and fine-tune your sightseeing days once forecasts arrive.

Which dates should I book for cherry blossoms in 2027?

Use the history above to pick a window, then match it to your trip length.

  • One week only: aim for Saturday, March 27 to Saturday, April 3, 2027. In each of the last six years, trees were in bloom for at least part of that window.
  • Ten days or more: arrive around March 23 and stay to April 5 or later. That window would have caught full bloom, or the days just after it, in all six recent years, from early 2023 to late 2024.
  • Flexible travelers: book a refundable stay now, then shift sightseeing days once the February forecasts are out.

Keep calendar clashes in mind. Easter Sunday 2027 is March 28, so UK, Australian and other school holidays overlap with peak bloom. Japanese schools also break for spring in late March and early April, and Japan's fiscal year starts on April 1, which brings a wave of people moving for new jobs. Demand for places to stay is high on all fronts.

How far ahead should I book for cherry blossom season?

As early as you can, and ideally three to six months ahead, which means now through December 2026 for a 2027 trip. Hotels in central Tokyo price the last week of March like a holiday weekend, and large rooms for families go first.

Booking early is less risky than it sounds if you check the cancellation terms. At our nightly houses, cancellation is free until 14 days before check-in (by 5:00 PM on that day for Nana House Nerima and Nana House Sakaecho). Nana House Sakaecho takes a 30% deposit when you book, with the remaining 70% paid at check-in. That means you can hold a house for the most likely week and still adjust if the forecast moves.

Also book your other fixed items early. If a visit to Harry Potter Studio Tokyo is part of the trip, read our guide on where to stay near Harry Potter Studio Tokyo; studio tickets are sold in date blocks on the official site, so spring dates may not be on sale yet.

Where should I stay in Tokyo for cherry blossom season?

There are two approaches. You can stay next to the famous spots, such as Ueno, Chidorigafuchi or Shinjuku Gyoen, and pay peak central-Tokyo prices for small rooms. Or you can stay in a residential area with a fast line into the center and walk to local parks in the morning, before the crowds.

We think the second works better for families and groups, and northwest Tokyo is a good fit:

  • Fast to the hubs. From Ekoda, local trains reach Ikebukuro in about six minutes. Ikebukuro connects to the JR Yamanote Line for Ueno and Shinjuku.
  • Local parks with cherry trees. Shakujii Park, a 7-minute walk from Shakujii-koen Station on our own Seibu Ikebukuro Line, is a popular picnic spot under the trees. Tetsugakudo Park in Nakano is about 1.2 miles (2 km) from Nana House Ekoda.
  • Space and a kitchen. Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) means picnics. With a kitchen you can make onigiri (rice balls) and sandwiches at home and skip the queues at park food stalls.
  • Room for everyone. A whole house sleeps a group under one roof. For larger groups, our Tokyo house rental for a large group guide compares the options.

For a deeper look at the area itself, see our Ekoda and Nerima stay guide.

What else should I plan for a cherry blossom trip?

  • Weather: late March in Tokyo is mild by day and cool at night. Expect days in the mid-teens °C (around 60°F) and evenings that can drop below 10°C (50°F). Pack layers and a light rain jacket; a rainy day can shorten the bloom.
  • Go early: weekend afternoons at famous parks are crowded. Weekday mornings are calmer, and that is when a short commute pays off.
  • Picnic manners: take all trash home with you, as many parks have few bins. Some parks and gardens limit or ban alcohol and tarps, so check each park's rules.
  • Late bloomers: if you arrive after Somei Yoshino petals fall, look for later varieties. Shakujii Park, for example, has wild mountain cherry trees that bloom after the main wave.

FAQ

When will the 2027 Tokyo cherry blossom forecast be released?

What is the best week for cherry blossoms in Tokyo in 2027?

Nobody can say yet. Based on recent years, the week from March 27 to April 3, 2027, has the best odds. A longer stay covering March 23 to April 5 covers almost every recent season.

Is it too early to book in October?

No. October to December is the right time. Choose places to stay with free cancellation so you can adjust if the forecast shifts.

How long do cherry blossoms last in Tokyo?

Roughly one to two weeks from first bloom to falling petals for Somei Yoshino, with the best few days around full bloom. Wind and rain can shorten it.
